Ilham Aliyev and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met in Brussels

At the invitation of NATO Secretary General, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

During the meeting, the NATO Secretary General said Azerbaijan is a valued Alliance partner and praised the service of the Azerbaijani armed forces in Operation Resolute Support in Afghanistan. He noted that Azerbaijani peacekeepers were the last soldiers to leave Afghanistan, having helped evacuate more than 120,000 people through the Afghan airport. Jens Stoltenberg thanked President Ilham Aliyev for this.

The head of state noted that Azerbaijan is a reliable partner of NATO, and this is already his seventh visit to Alliance headquarters. He said that Azerbaijani military served in Afghanistan from 2002 until the end of August 2021.

During the conversation, the parties exchanged views on regional issues in the post-conflict period and said Azerbaijan was ready to negotiate a peace deal with Armenia. Security concerns in the region were also discussed.

President Ilham Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan maintains close ties of friendship and strategic partnership with NATO member states, as well as strategic alliance relations with brother Turkey, one of the main member states. of the Alliance.

The parties also underlined the importance of Azerbaijan’s partnership with NATO’s Partnership for Peace program since 1994. In this context, it was noted that Azerbaijan actively participates in the Individual Action Plan of NATO. NATO partnership and other programs, as well as operational military coordination between the Azerbaijani armed forces and NATO. the troops are growing. At the same time, the sides exchanged views on Azerbaijan’s participation in NATO exercises and exercises between Turkey and Azerbaijan on a bilateral basis.

The important role of Azerbaijan in the energy security of Europe was also underlined during the meeting. Azerbaijan’s contribution as a regional transport and logistics center in the implementation of NATO’s Resolute Support mission was also welcomed.
