The Eni-Total joint venture will start drilling in the Cyprus EEZ at the end of this month

Cypriot Energy Minister Natasa Pilides said on Thursday that the next drilling by the Eni-Total joint venture in the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus will likely take place this month once the drilling rig has completed its work. in Egypt.

In statements on the sidelines of the Famagusta Business Forum, Pilides also said that ExxonMobil-Qatar Energy will start seismic research this summer, most likely in June, in Block 5 of the Cyprus EEZ and probably for parts of the block. 10 as well.

The Minister also underlined that Cyprus has joined efforts to end the EU’s energy dependence on Russian natural gas.

Responding to questions from journalists, Pilides noted that the Eni-Total joint venture will most likely conduct a second drilling in 2022.

She said that there were continuous contacts with the EU, that Cyprus had joined efforts to end the EU’s energy dependence on Russian natural gas “and we hope that we will have developments on this very soon”.

Asked about Turkey‘s purchases of drilling rigs, Pilides said this did not stop Cyprus’ energy plans.

“Certainly the support from the EU and the fact that Cyprus, Israel and Egypt have joined the plans to supply natural gas to the EU is a very important development which we believe will help accelerate our own program,” she added.
